Story
RED January is here to help people support their mental health with physical activity, in partnership with Solent Mind.
I'm asking for donations specifically for services in Southampton because I've met so many people affected by mental heath whilst growing up here.
Fitness has been my hobby and main method of maintaining good mental heath for years. My friends all said the same thing: "you already do more than 15 minutes every day," not quite...recently, on rest days, I don't even do my mandatory stretches because:
-I'm tired
-work
-I'm depressed AF because it's winter
I know I'm not alone in feeling like this. But to raise the challenge I'm going to make my goal at least 30 minutes a day. I know that still seems easy for me but that's not why I'm doing it. I don't need to get fitter or loose weight but to keep stress and negative thoughts away.
This country is in the midst of mental health crisis, not to mention that we're catching up with the US in adult obesity statistics. We're now only 14% less than the highest in the world. We're now better informed about mental illness but our NHS is too underfunded to cope with the current demand, making charity run services like 'Mind' vital.
I hope to raise awareness of the charity and cause. inspire others to use movement to improve their mental health daily. Movement-what human beings are designed to do. You don't have to sign up for a marathon or join a gym you just need to move. It will improve your mood drastically.
I know it's January, but we live in a society where we don't think twice about paying £3 for a coffee or £6 for a Gin and Tonic. Even if you gave the equivalent of a drink you'd buy me, I'm sure you'd get it back soon enough!
