Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On the 19th of April 2017, I came off my motorbike and was subsequently driven over by a lorry.
This left me unable to move from the road and I needed the help of the other motorists around me.
Thankfully, one of the motorists was an 'off-duty' paramedic on his way to work.
As the pain began to increase I heard the rotary blades of the Air Ambulance circling above, it was at this point I knew it was serious and I began to panic.
I was able to move my arms and legs but my torso was completely immobile.
The doctor from the Air Ambulance came over and gave me some Entonox and some other pain killers. As these began to work, my awareness reduced. I vaguely remember being carried on a spine board to the Air Ambulance and I also remember parts of the journey, my only view was the ceiling of the helicopter. Before I was taken out of the Air Ambulance I was unconscious.
I regained consciousness after being stabilised in A&E at The Royal London Hospital and was then transferred to a ward.
I had fractured my Pelvis in three places.
I had a handful of fractured vertebrae.
I had dislocated my left thumb.
I was in surgery on 22 April 17 where the surgeon stabilised my thumb and placed some nuts and bolts into my pelvis.
I then spent two weeks on the ward whilst I recovered. This was extremely painful at times and I was on Morphine for 9 days. The Nursing staff on the ward were brilliant and hugely patient with me.
I was then discharged and spent 10 weeks in a wheel chair whilst my pelvis healed. During this period, the pain began to subside and the swelling slowly reduced.
I was taken to Headley Court for rehabilitation and to assist with the transition between wheelchair and walking.
Over the past 12 months I have slowly been regaining my strength and ability to function as normal person again.
I owe my recovery to the staff of the Air Ambulance and if it wasn't for them, I do not believe I would have been able to recover as well as I have.
My thanks go to them!!
To mark twelve months since getting out of my wheel chair, I will attempt to pass 24 Army Personal Fitness Assessments in 24 hours.
To pass one Army Physical Fitness Assessment for my age I need to achieve the following:
41 Press-ups
46 Sit-ups
1.5 Miles in 11:00 minutes
I will do this 24 times during a 24hr period.
Wish me luck by donating to the Air Ambulance.
