Story

Thank you to everyone who has sponsored me so far for the event.  Your generosity is appreciated by so many people!

I recovered well enough to take part and decided at 4pm the night before the race that I could ride.  The weather in Scotland was terrible before and after the race, but we were lucky during.  You may have seen on the national news that the race was sabotaged (by one person) who laid carpet tacks through a 15 mile stretch of the course (primarily over the Schiehallion mountain pass).  3,500 of us were held up when the race was stopped for an hour and a half until the course was deemed safe enough to pass.  However 2 of us picked up 3 punctures on the Schiehallion descent.  Due to the delay and hundreds of punctures, none of the race timings are correct, but we believe that we would have completed in just under 5 hours total riding time.

The scenery was spectacular and I am delighted to raise money for the BTA.  Thanks again for all your support and I hope I can take on an even bigger challenge over the rest of the season.

Thanks everyone for visiting my fundraising page.

It's been a bad week in the run up to the event.  Everything was perfect until I came down with a chest infection 6 days before the race.  I do feel like an elite athelete though (deluded I hear you scream!) as I have two GP's and an X-ray department treating me like Lance Armstrong which has cheered me up.  Still, there is a chance I can recover well enough to ride and I will be doing everything I can to travel to Scotland on Friday with my team mates.

If for any reason I can't complete the event, I will transfer to another event in a month or two to ensure your generosity is rightly rewarded.  Thanks for your support everyone.

Anyway.....
On the 17th May, I'm cycling the Etape Caledonia closed road race in memory of my father-in-law Ted Bloor, who for a large part of his life suffered with terrible tinnitus.  The reality of living with this condition is relatively unknown and certainly underestimated by most of us.  Tinnitus can be debilitating and affects many aspects of an individuals life.  Ted was a passionate musician and music teacher and his ongoing difficulty with hearing and the associated tinnitus came close to ruining something so important in his life.  Having to cope with this condition can be extremely frustrating, depressing and life altering.  As I mentioned, Tinnitus is realtively unknown by the greater public and smaller associations like the BTA, who offer such an important service to its beneficiaries, often struggle to maintain signficant funding from sponsors and inidividuals. Commonly, this can be down to the constant challenge of battling larger well known charitable organisations with significant marketing budgets who continue to get the majority of donations from commercial organisations and individuals.

The day of the race, would have been Ted's 80th birthday.

Donating to the BTA (described on the left) through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: The British Tinnitus Association gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.  Brilliant!

So please sponsor me now (and be generous - I know how rich you all are : ) I am training really hard and at last i'm really looking forward to this challenge. I'm currently training 100 - 180 miles per week (time allowing). The course on the big day is 81 miles through the Scottish Highlands (i'll drag myself to the finish if necessary).  Your donations will help thousands of people across the country with support from this worthy charity.

Many thanks to all of you - Jason
