Story

Hi and Welcome to my findrasing page!!!!

I would appreciate a moment of your time so that i may introduce myself. My name is Jason Smit and I have recently been selected for the GB Team to represent the at the World Transplant games to be held Australia 2009.  As a transplant athlete, I am required to raise my own funds to attend the games and would appreciate if you would take the time to read my story and possibly make a contribution towards my sponsorship.

On the 04th December 2006 I was fortunate enough to receive a double organ transplant. I was a type 1 diabetic (insulin dependant) from the age of nine and in 2004 I experienced sudden kidney failure. I underwent numerous operations to be able dialyze at home so that I would not be dependant on the hospital’s renal unit.

After an initial success I experienced numerous complications and eventually had to commit to three five hour dialysis sessions per week at the renal unit at Broomfield hospital.

Tests and evaluations were conducted during those twenty months to determine my suitability for an organ transplant.  Only a very small minority of people with type 1 diabetes are eligible for a combined kidney pancreas transplant.

The initial period after the transplant was one of great difficulty; however after a short recovery period I had never felt happier or healthier.  I would like to Thank all who supported me and cared for me, my family, Docors and nurses, colleagues and friends.

In February of this year I made the decision to start regaining my fitness levels by swimming and ultimately to participate competitively in the Annual British Transplant Games where I received two silver and a bronze medal. My success at the British Games has given me the opportunity to be selected for the GB National team.

Organ transplantation can give the gift of life and many who have considered signing the register have not for various reasons. One donor can give the gift of life to 11 people experiencing a life threatening illness.

If you would like to consider giving the ultimate gift, please register online at www.uktransplant.org.uk or alternatively call -0845 60 60 400.  This will only take a few minutes of your time which could give someone a new beginning.

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page and for reading my story
