Our story - My journey
This is my mum. You will know her as Shirley but to me she’s mum - our rock.
There’s a whole load of back story about this incredible woman I could share but I wish for you to focus your attention on the present.
On the 27th August 2021 my mum, our rock, was diagnosed with Parkinson, not only did we receive that devastating news, but we were also told she has the additional diagnosis of PSP (progressive supranuclear palsy), meaning an aggressive onset of symptoms that is slowly taking away the mum I know and love so dearly.
As her son I am heartbroken.
Our backbone of our family, who raised 3 children single handed…3 incredible children, (if I do say so myself ☺️) has had her life changed to unrecognisable levels and her later years will be so cruelly ripped away from her
The years she is owed, the years she worked so hard for. To be able to relax and enjoy her life and more importantly, her family - to watch her grandchildren grow.
Us lads have a terrible time dealing with our emotions and anything we’re unable to control or fix. So for me I’m challenging Parkinson’s and PSP head on the best way I can.
You might think I am running away from the illness that has captured my mum…but you’re wrong, I am running towards it, challenging it head on
There’s currently no cure for Parkinson’s and PSP but there is hope that with every single penny raised will go towards research that will allow others in the future to possibly have something more than there is now. A life beyond the illness.
Join me to #outrunthedark and #outrunparkinson, whether it be with a donation, training run, taking time to join me on the day for a chatty mile or two or even just clapping and cheering me over the line.
I will be forever grateful to every one of you.
This is for Shirley - my mum. Our rock
