Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Well, I'm proud to say mission accomplished on both fronts. I completed the London Marathon in 5:18 and I reached my fundraising target. It was a fantastic experience on the day, one which I hope to repeat and improve on my time next year. More importantly, Bliss is going to benefit hugely from all the generous donations we've received. If you haven't donated yet, please read the story below and give a little if you can.
Back in 1999 Jo and I were devastated when our baby daughter, Eve, died at just 8 days old. Eve spent her very short life in the special care baby unit at the Royal London Hospital, where she was cared for fantastically by the wonderful staff. Units like this rely heavily on equipment donated by Bliss. Parents like us depend on Bliss to provide them with support and advice. Our experience inspired me to run the London Marathon in 2000 to riase funds for Bliss.
Back then I was a very fit 30 year old who trained very hard to be targeting a sub-4 hour time. Then I got a flu virus a week before the run. I ignored all the sensible advice and ran anyway. I woke up in Newham Hospital with no memory of having been scooped up off the road at the 19 mile mark. Now, twelve years older and two and a half stones heavier, I'm having another go!
One in every nine babies in the UK is born premature or sick. That means over 80,000 babies and their families are affected every year. Bliss is the only national charity dedicated to improving both the survival and long-term quality of life for babies born too soon, too small or too sick to cope on their own.
I know that times are hard, but if you are thinking of supporting anyone in the London Marathon, please make it me.
Many thanks.
