Story
My dad Paul Bevan died suddenly of cancer when I was 8. A successful, energetic businessman employing over 600 people, committed father and ex professional sportsman, he was diagnosed aged 42 and died in months. The Paul Bevan Day Hospice was created by my amazing Mum and close family friends to help others in the same plight, and quickly grew to look after several thousand people with life-limiting conditions . Now merged and renamed Thames Hospice (with all day and outpatient services operated from the impressive new Paul Bevan centre) , this amazing and highly regarded organisation has just had it's £22M home on Bray lake opened by The Queen and Princess Anne, in one of the Queen's very last public appearances, to create one of the best facilities of it's kind in the world. The Queen and her family have a long very personal connection with the hospice visiting many times over the last 30 years and providing their time resources and personal funds. With a cool £7m of annual running costs to raise, I asked friends and family to come together to create the Big Mountain Challenge, cycling iconic Tour De France climbs in the Alps to help our hospice patients climb their own mountain. We raised £110k in 2019 and after two years of pandemic postponements we are back with another group of riders and sponsors with a wide range of ages and abilities, pro riders and extensive vehicle support. We are aiming to raise a six figure sum to help the hospice provide comfort, care and love for patients, when it matters most. After 2.5 years of covid date shifts and pulling the event together, cycling the Alps will be the easy bit! Thank you for your support.
