Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
No one knows what causes multiple sclerosis and there is no cure. Its symptoms can strike without warning and include loss of mobility and sight, muscle spasms, slurred speech, fatigue and depression.
Sunday 24th April 2010 - I ran 25.3 miles (my garmin) in 4 hours and 10 minutes and was just speeding up as I reached the 24.9 miles stage of the race (running all the way) when BANG........I collapsed.
The next thing I knew, I was laying on a stretcher in a tent with the St Johns Ambulance staff. My watch now said 4 hours 39 minutes. I had no idea what day it was, what 4 hours 39 minutes meant and could not think - I was so frightened... what had happened? I could not feel my legs or arms, my back hurt.........I tried to move, but I had lost my mobility - it was horrible, especially when the medical staff were trying to keep me calm.
Thankfully, the staff sat me up, although my legs and arms were still like jelly and helped me recover. I had suffered from lack of oxygen and low salt levels, despite having drunk at each station and regularly taking gels.
2 hours and 20 minutes after collapsing they allowed me to restart at 24 miles with my brother-in-law at my side. We walked for 2 miles (which for me was a very proud moment) and then I was told I needed to finish on my own.
I managed to hobble the last part, with my family and supporters cheering me on - a great and rewarding moment...................I made it..............yes the hard way, but lots of people suffer more than I did at the later stages of the marathon every day of their lives, and I was determined to finish for them, and help raise as much money as I could to give them the chance that St Johns medical staff had given me.
