Milton Keynes Marathon 2012 · 29 April 2012 ·
Hi there,
On Sunday 29th April 2012, I will be taking part in the 1st ever Milton Keynes Marathon...and it's not just a 1st for them it's a 1st for me too!!
I will be raising money for the National Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline. The main aim of the helpline is to ensure that those worried about their family history have access to full information on all the options currently available, referrals where appropriate, and full peer support for whatever option is chosen. Most importantly that those affected have the opportunity to make informed choices. It is also an important role of the helpline to reassure those worrying unnecessarily.
Their work is fantastic & vital for bringing much needed support to people like me. Several months ago, I found out that there was something I needed to be aware of in my family history.
Then in October I received a positive result following my genetic test for a hereditary BRCA1 mutation. This means that I have inherited this gene mutation & it puts me at high risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. It also gives my baby girl a 50/50 chance of inheriting the mutation from me. I will now receive yearly TA/TV Ultrasounds as well as CA125 blood tests & am awaiting yearly breast MRI & Mammogram screening due to start from April. I'm also contemplating my next move in regards to the possible preventative surgery options...
But in the meantime my family isn't the only one out there going through this right now. By sponsoring me you can help provide this much needed support to people affected by hereditary cancer.
