Story
It’s been 5 years since we lost Alastair to this heartbreaking condition of (early onset) dementia. That time has flown by, but like many neuro degenerative conditions, the illness itself has not vanished in this time. Every day people experience the heartbreak of being diagnosed with dementia, knowing there is little or no treatment to assuage the impact of the condition.
We both have personal and professional experience of seeing the impact of dementia on the person, their life, their choices, their freedom, and the courage of families and friends who care for and support those living with dementia.
Janice set up this fund in Alastairs name in collaboration with Queensland Brain Institute to not only honour Alastair, but to contribute to funding the essential research into why dementia occurs, and what needs to be done to prevent, stop and treat such a cruel disease.
We are both committed to this work and will be completing a trek to Kangaroo Island in South Australia to raise money as our contribution to the funds which keep this essential research going.
We want to see people being able to live well with dementia in the future.

If you would like to support in anyway, or would like to share your own story of dementia please do so. Our stories are important.
Some other information:
Dementia affects almost one in 10 people over the age of 65. Discoveries at the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) are the critical lifeline to solving this debilitating disease. If you feel inspired to give to the important work of QBI at The University of Queensland please support our participation in the QBI Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trek. The funds will support a PhD student studying dementia research through the Alastair Rushworth Scholarship Fund. Please help by giving whatever you can using the 'Give now' button. The more people that know about this cause, the greater the impact, so please also spread the word by sharing our page with your family and friends. Thank you for your support.
