I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2014. Since then I have had a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. I am raising money for the Mermaid Centre at Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, the largest unit in the South West where almost 500 cancers are diagnosed and treated each year. The centre is however, 'bursting at the seams' and they would like to purchase new equipment to improve surgical outcomes for their patients by reducing post surgery infection. The Mermaid Centre is a place where I feel safe. The staff do their jobs with sensitivity, compassion and even humour. They have made me feel looked after, given me hope and optimism and made me laugh!
During my treatment I tried to do as much as I could when I could and kept fit through walking my dog for long walks on the coast path. After treatment I decided to do the Great North Run. I haven't trained quite as much as I hoped to but I'm very determined to do it, although maybe slower than I planned! My husband and my friend Caroline who is also doing the Great North Run have been fantastic training partners and motivators.
