MY STORY :
Hi my names Janet (AKA FIT JAN(car reg)), mum of 4 grown up babies 18,21,27,28)and married 28 years to mike (AKA MY ROCK). Loving life even during lockdown , I was suddenly diagnosed October 26 2020 with aggressive grade 3 invasive her2 breast cancer that had spread to 2 lymph! My world came crashing down - paralysed with fear .... was the 1st time I felt there was no future ! But once a treatment plan was rolled out I was inspired and motivated to play my part alongside the multidisciplinary team at Bolton snd Christie’s . I trusted in the plan .. chemotherapy then surgery (mastectomy and full axillary clearance )then radiotherapy to chest wall . Depending on what they see in the mastectomy tissue I may need a further 18 cycles of chemo !
I started chemo on dec 2nd .. HOORAY !
So I decided to create that iron man mindset ( having never done a triathlon 😂 ) and see my treatment in 3 parts like a triathlon (an ultra !!!) . I researched exercise as I was mindful to not overdo and was amazed to see the outstanding benefits to exercise during and beyond cancer . In America it’s given as part of the treatment plan ! So I’ve taken this onboard. Due to chemo I have to pace and stay in z2 and read my body !
I have built up resilience through overcoming many setbacks in my life so I KNOW I CAN DO THIS ! The pictures above are my life before cancer and there’s just the one now ... DREAM BELIEVE ACHIEVE .
SETBACKS BEFORE DIAGNOSIS :
Scoliosis at 13 - had to wear a body brace 4 years 24/7 followed by 2 operations to fuse most of spine 18-21 . I loved exercise but had to give it up save for an occasional swim .
2 prolapsed discs at 28 putting me in constant pain for 10 years leading to depression as nothing could be done and I had to give up work as a speech therapist and rest most of time . The only thing keeping me sane was a short swim and the support of my family .
Birth of Isabel .. she had severe congenital developmental disorder with severe learning difficulties and severe autism . It was heartbreaking to see her struggle and the impact it has on you as a family . She needs 24 1:1 care . When she turned 19 a place came available for her to go into independent supported living and life got easier !
OVERCOMING :
So I retrained as a counsellor/cbt therapist /hypnotherapist & homeopath and absolutely LOVE HELPING OTHERS ! I set up my own private practice and had a few proper swimming lessons to learn freestyle ! I started to work out more joined the gym and loved spin n core . Always struggled to run as get tendinitis . I joined tri rivi 2016 to meet other open water swimmers and ventured out eventually onto the bike after a trapeziectomee (removal of thumb bone for arthritis). STARTED TO THINK ABOUT TRIATHLONS 🧐
I took on Windermere one way swim (10.5 miles 17 k ) in 2017 & 2018 ... then had a torn rotator cuff 18 months later and opted for repair feb 2020 . Then covid came followed quickly by my mums death and me finding several lumps in my left breast !
NOW ... THE RACE FOR LIFE :
Exercise is my go to as is seeing friends and having fun! I thrive on challenges and I know I’m seen as very competitive 🤣 but most of the time I love helping others . So I am using this crisis in my life as an opportunity to inspire others to move especially when you are struggling and feel down and especially during cancer treatment and beyond ! So I am taking on various sporting challenges throughout my treatment ... kicking off with Santa dash , erdinger5kmoveyourway ,cycling lejog virtual and walking Hadrian’s wall virtual... 🤪
Please give anything you can ... your support is amazing ... let’s see what we can raise xxx
