Story
I live in Dorset and have been visiting immigration detainees at The Verne IRC on Portland since October 2014. I've met many inspiring people through visiting with incredible stories to tell. The stories are often harrowing, but despite the awful ordeal these people have been through they have survived and are now trying to cope in a very difficult environment with very little freedom for what is often a very long time. Many have no idea when they will be released and the future is very uncertain for them. They are often deported to dangerous places that they were seeking sanctuary from. I am learning a lot about how strong and resilient people can be and feel I'm making a difference to peoples lives by offering friendship and some practical support. If anyone has any free time I really recommend doing this. It's fulfilling, inspiring and humbling all at the same time!
When I'm not practising for my 10k shuffle or eating chocolate to power me on...or driving to Portland I run singing groups of various kinds. It's fantastic work and I love it. I am also very lucky to have a great mixture of humans and pets to sing with at home.
I'm a very slow runner...if you can call it running..so I'll definitely be at the back but I am training a lot so hopefully I'll manage the whole 10 k without falling over!
