We are walking 11.5 miles in June to show support for our good friend Carolyn Langley, to raise money for Maggie's and to support all people affected by cancer
As many of you will be aware, our fellow Rambler and good friend, Carolyn Langley, is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumour. This has involved numerous trips to University Hospital Southampton, many of these involving South Wilts Ramblers who very kindly offered to be both drivers, and priceless friends offering support. Whilst at the hospital, occasionally for several hours, we were introduced to the Maggie’s Centre on site; a beautifully tranquil and peaceful place ‘everyone’s home of cancer care’ We were always greeted with a welcoming smile, a comfy sofa, a cup of tea and a choice of biscuits!
'Maggie was a writer, gardener and designer. When she was 47, Maggie was diagnosed with breast cancer and five years later, in May 1993, on a visit to the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, she was told that it had returned.
Maggie and Charles designed the blueprint for the centres together, enlisting the help of some of their friends from the architectural world.
She believed that with encouragement to become actively involved in treatment, and with the right information and support, people could change the way they live with cancer. Above all what matters is not to lose the joy of living in the fear of dying.
Maggie died shortly before the first centre opened, at the Western General Hospital – but with the support of Charles, and her medical team, including her cancer nurse Laura Lee (now Maggie’s CEO), her vision has lived on.'
