Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.  I am raising money for Cancer Research Uk and Cystic Fibrosis Trust therefore have two separate pages for your donations to go directly to the charity of your choice.

You can click on the Team Page below with the picture of my sister and myself to choose Cancer Research UK if you prefer.

In just four weeks time, my sister Claire and I are taking on the mighty Ironman Nice, France.  “So what?”, you might say, “You’re always undertaking crazy challenges!”.  This time is different. Ironman Nice is the longest and toughest race I have ever done, involving the most demanding training I have ever undertaken (10-16 hours a week for the last 9 months).  This race will push me to my limits: starting with a 3.8km swim in the Mediterranean Sea; followed by 180km cycle, which includes a draw-dropping 5,000 feet of challenging climbs; and then straight into a full marathon (42km).  And all this as quickly as possible!

In addition, I have promised myself and Will that this will be the first and last Ironman I will ever compete in. More importantly, I am also challenging myself to use the opportunity to raise funds for two very important charities to my family: Cancer Research UK and Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

So, how can you support?

Help me to support the incredible life-saving cancer research undertaken by Cancer Research UK. Cancer Research UK don’t receive any Government funding so every pound donated counts. By supporting my Ironman attempt, you will know that you are contributing to the charity’s relentless efforts to beat cancer.

With your help I also want to support Cystic Fibrosis Trust (CF). Affecting almost 10,000 people in the UK, cystic fibrosis is a crippling, life-shortening inherited disease, clogging vital organs with thick sticky mucus. There is presently no cure and only one national charity currently working for families with CF and to find a cure. This charity is particularly dear to me. Samuel Austin, 13 years old, is the eldest child of my cousins-in-law Henry and Sara Austin. Samuel, a very bright, funny and caring young boy, suffers from cystic fibrosis.  Ever since Samuel was born he has shown strength, courage and determination despite having endured many painful treatments, daily medication and physio, umpteen doctors and hospital appointments. Your money will go towards improving the quality of life for people like Samuel and also their life expectancy. People born with cystic fibrosis currently have an average life expectancy of only 41 years.

I never imagined that I would take on an Ironman. I know many amazing triathletes who have undertaken this grueling race and I have always admired and cheered from the sidelines. All that changed last September when my dear friend and fellow triathlete Roy Nasr died whilst training. It was Roy who inspired me to become the triathlete I am today. It was Roy who did and still does encourage me to dig deeper, go faster and achieve the impossible!

In honour of Roy and to support the many thousands of people living with cancer and cystic fibrosis I need your help to make my Ironman Nice a truly worthwhile (as well as crazy!) challenge.

If you can, please donate just £2 to my Ironman Nice fund. £2 is the cost an average cup of coffee, but to these two charities it could really make a difference.

Thank you for all your support.  I'll let you know how I get on!
