Story
On Saturday 11 June 2022, I will embark on a 14-day cycle challenge from Land's End to John O'Groats for Cycling to Freedom, an initiative to support the evacuation and resettlement of the female Afghan cycling community and their families.
I'll be cycling around 1,000 miles, that's an average of 72 miles of cycling a day and climbing more than 6,500ft on some days. You can view an interactive map of the route here: Peak Tours Lands End to John O Groats - Tour Map – Google My Maps.
Cycling to Freedom, led by Fieldfisher, supports iProbono in enabling the liberation of at-risk female Afghan cyclists and their families. The funds raised will support their safe evacuation and resettlement to a new home. iProbono has been coordinating the evacuation with Shannon Galpin, the first woman to mountain bike in Afghanistan in 2009. She is also an activist who has worked with the Afghan National Women's Cycling Team prior to the Taliban takeover.
For female Afghan cyclists, riding a bike is a symbol of freedom, it defies gender stereotypes and cultural taboos. But because of this, they have been identified as an at-risk group under the Taliban regime. Resettling is vital to their safety.
I hope you will support me and the female Afghan cycling community. Media attention may have dwindled, but their needs have not.
