Story
I am running the Great North Run, in Newcastle, on the 12 September 2021 to help my brother, Bruce. That's him in the first photo above. Obviously taken a long time ago, when we and my older brother, Bill were all at school. Bruce turned 60 earlier this year and has advanced early onset Alzheimer's. He is looked after at Ashby House, in Milton Keynes where the staff are fantastic - always kind, cheerful and supportive. He can no longer speak or stand and I don't think he knows me. When my mum died of Alzheimer's in 2002, everyone told me '' don't worry - they will have a cure in 20 years' '. But we don't. Despite the very best efforts of our scientists and medics we still do not have a cure. We are so much closer and we know that 40% of dementias are preventable but we are still waiting for successive governments to honour their pledges to fund properly dementia research and care and to support those who work so hard, every day, to support their loved ones and to continue their lives as normal, for as long as they possibly can. It is probably too late for Bruce, but for others and their carers I want to raise as much money as I possibly can. So please dig deep as every pound will help me along the way on the 12 September and take us a step or two closer to beating this cruellest of illnesses. Thank you.
