Story
In September 2022, I will be attempting to swim the English Channel alongside a relay team of five other swimmers, raising money for Aspire charity.
Aspire is a national charity that provides practical help to people who have been paralysed by Spinal Cord Injury. A spinal cord injury can happen to anyone at any time, and no one is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire exists because there is currently no cure.
The straight-line distance from Dover to Calais is a gruelling 21 miles, but due to tidal currents and weather conditions, we will likely end up covering 28+ miles. The swim could take anywhere between 9 to 25 hours to complete.
We will likely complete part of the swim in the middle of the night. The water temperature will be 15-16 degrees; by comparison an average swimming pool is 27 degrees. To comply with official regulations, we will be swimming without wetsuits and are not allowed to touch the support boat or anyone else during the swim.
The English Channel is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, and we will need to navigate plenty of jelly fish and floating debris.
Whilst we very much hope to complete the distance, there is always the chance that the swim may be postponed, cancelled or that we don't make it across the channel. Please donate knowing that this could happen.
