Story
Iain died 12 months ago aged 92 after a lifetime of service to the churches and the people of Hawkesbury, Newent, North Nibley and Wotton Under Edge as well as a number of causes. Every May he would tramp the streets for Christian Aid Week to raise funds to help some of the poorest of the world to improve their livelihoods.
James himself worked for Christian Aid for eight years, four of which were spent with his young family in Honduras facilitating development and relief projects through local partners and churches across Central America, and a further four based in London supporting Africa and Asia. Through devastating hurricanes, earthquakes, droughts and the tsunami James saw first hand the impact of quick-to-the-scene local organisations with local know-how and influence, as well as the importance of empowering people to take control of their own destiny.
Peter is Parish Priest of North Nibley and Associate Priest in the Tyndale Benefice including Wotton Under Edge, Alderley and Tresham. An enthusiastic Christian Aid supporter himself he served alongside Iain, inspired not only by his teachings but also his determination each year as he would doggedly probe those hard-to-reach parts with the collecting box.
When he lived at Newent Iain loved to visit the Forest of Dean to walk the dogs, one day getting so lost in its many tracks that but for a fortuitous passing wood-cutters lorry he would certainly have had to spend the night in the wild! So it is fitting that James and Peter will be revisiting some of these haunts on two wheels on 11th October.
Please pledge whatever you can to remember Iain and to enable Christian Aid to continue the work he supported for so many years.
