Story

Inspired by a little boy called George, 20 legends have undertaken one of the most gruelling challenges any one can undertake … with only a 8 weeks training  ! They swum 1.8km, they then biked over 90km… with a half marathon to finish !

They did so, so that you would google the symptoms of Meningitis, and make sure you never go through the pain that so many do…. 200,000 every year lose this battle….

So thank you for any support, let’s work together to beat this horrendous disease

From the bottom of our hearts and building on from the challenge below, a huge thank you! You have inspired so many people and

FORWARDS TEAM !

Jay, Gaz Georges self assigned protectors, and Craig (Drewy)  his rugby surrogate Dad and play mate are climbing Kili with 20kg on their backs.

Thanks for taking the time to read our story, George contracted Meningitis last December, it was bacterial and  he was fully vaccinated … the Doctors said it was a 1 in 200,000 chance…. After the darkest hours of my life, time in intensive care, George pulled through, and we dared to dream of him making a full recovery….. however sadly after a suspected seizure, George was readmitted to hospital a few days before Christmas unable to hear, and has now been left permanently deaf.

I knew nothing about Meningitis, I knew something about a rash and a glass and that was it … symptoms that George did not have … and here in lies the problem … thousands of people die each year, often because the symptoms are not understood… in our case our only symptom was lethargy... but there are so many more.

So Gaz, Craig and I want to raise as much awareness as we can about the symptoms, in the hope that we can prevent this happening to another family… we are so lucky to have George with us, many families are not.

So we will climb Kilimanjaro carrying George with us… (his equivalent weight is 20KG) trying to match the incredible bravery he has shown…and in an attempt to show him in years to come, that he can do anything he sets his mind to……the training starts now and I am being supported by my long term friend Gaz Collins.

Gaz lived with us in Abu Dhabi, was there when George was born in Kuwait, and they became life long buddies, Gaz self proclaimed roll is Georges protector... but sadly not even he can stop Meningitis.

Craig has been with us since we arrived in Abu Dhabi, the friendship him and George share was born at the Rugby pitch, where he spends hours playing with George, but spills over as amazing support to the entire family with his wife Jodie also, in Craig’s own words “I’m picking you up and carrying you and George, we are doing this”

Thank you so much for any support, this is something personal to me, as a father I have never felt more helpless.

Thanks again and god bless.

Meningitis is deadly; killing and seriously disabling in hours. Small children and young adults are high risk, but all ages can be affected. Globally 1,000 people die daily. We fundraise to invest in research, campaign for vaccines, provide symptom information and support those already affected.
