Story
Hello friends, especially RICH ones!
If you are reading this its coz you know me and you're interested in what I am doing and why. Or it's just coz you're a nosey sod! :-)
Well, here goes...
Back in May 2013 Molly, aged a wee bit over two, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL). Or, if it makes it easier, CANCER of the blood.
Many of you will know Molly's Dad, Roy or mum Alice and will also know Molly is my godaughter.
When news of the diagnosis came to light you can only imagine how it hit Alice & Roy. The nearest specialist hospital is the Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) and although it is technically in the South West, as are we, it was simply too far for Roy & Alice to commute daily once Molly was an inmate!
VERY early on Alice and Roy were informed of Sam's House. (http://www.clicsargent.org.uk/in-my-area/clic-sargent-homes-from-home/sams-house)
Sam's House is a CLIC Sargent property in Bristol which is a very short (albeit steep) walk from the BRI.
For the first few days neither Alice or Roy would leave Molly's side. Poor Molly was not only battling cancer of the blood but also had to share a room the size of a Portaloo (other portable Poo Tardis's are available!) with both parents!
If you think Roy might smell after a few weeks on a boat you really need to experience the stench of Alice after a day or two without soap! (Now you may understand where Molly learnt the word 'YUCK'!)
After some really tough days and nights and the bombardment of information about treatment regimes, and medication side effects, Roy and Alice both realised they would need their strength to support Molly, each other and indeed the entourage of family and friends who care so much for the three of them.
With this in mind the offer for a room at Sam's House was, if reluctantly, accepted.
Fe and I had already stayed their once and knew it was by no means a youth hostel!
Instead it was truly a home from home where you could truly relax, take stock, sleep or be man enough to cry without worrying who you may upset.
CLIC Sargent are not just a charity that fill empty shops with tat to sell. They do fantastic and meaningful work to support parents and children suffering from Cancer.
CLIC Sargent was formed in 2005 after a successful merger between CLIC and Sargent Cancer Care for Children.
- Sargent Cancer Care for Children - founded in 1968 by Sylvia Darley OBE as a lasting memory to the late Sir Malcolm Sargent.
- CLIC - Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood - founded in 1976 in the south west by Bob Woodward following the diagnosis of his young son Robert with cancer two years before. Sadly, Robert died in 1977 aged 11 years, and Bob went on to dedicate his life to charity work.
So, miss a Pint or ditch the fags and put your hand in your pocket to donate some dosh for this amazing cause!
And no apologies for the short notice! I stupidly said if I raise a grand I would abseil in a 'Mankini'! Very happy with the £200 target we've set! :-)
