Story

Thank you for visiting my JustGiving page.

106km, 24hrs, 2 brothers, 1 island. My brother and I are walking all of the coastline of The Isle of Wight for The Alzheimer's Society. This terrible condition has affected our family, as it has many others across the world. To paraphrase Luke Skywalker somewhat:  "My Father had it, my Mother has it and my brother has it..."

We believe that this illness can be eradicated, that those that have it and those that care for them should be free to grow old together, keep creating memories and still share times which this disease has sadly taken from so many. To help continue the amazing work that has been done already, we are asking you to donate whatever you can to the cause. The work done by the Society, the legion of family members and carers and other fundraisers has meant that great advances have been made. I'm marching this mission to do my bit and I hope you will join me. You don't even need to get blisters...

Personally, I've got £10 on me being face down by Cowes. But if you like me, please donate accordingly. Similarly, if you hate me, still donate knowing that not only are you helping people but it will really really hurt me to complete this beast. And I'm doing it on a Bank Holiday weekend when really I should be eating and relaxing. At last count, I had precisely no ankles that work properly, a nearly broken toe, a knackered back and a 15 a day Old Holborn habit. As far as I'm willing to investigate, it's how Usain Bolt started. I am training now and working on my long distance walkers bum wiggle. As a bonus, if you want a souvenir from Blackgang Chine (Land of Imagination) or a blown-glass guitar shaped ornament filled with multicoloured sand...you're in luck. The way I see it, if I make it to 6 and a half foot from the finish line and collapse forwards...then I'm still going to finish.

If you can help and share this page, you will be doing something that really will change lives. Below is a list of examples of what can be done with what we can raise together. Adam and I are aiming to raise £790. If you donate to his page or mine, it all goes into the same fund as we join forces to beat the living fear juice out of an illness whose time has come.

Wight Walkers, we Ryde at dawn...and man is she terrified...

Here's a little breakdown of how your donations will help...

£500 could mean 40 callers getting the expert advice and support they need from our National Dementia Helpline.

£1,000 could fund a research nurse to be involved in a study at the forefront of clinical science for a week.

£1,500 could pay for five people affected by dementia to have an hour of one-to-one support a week for a year from an experienced dementia support worker to help them feel less alone and to identify the services that could help them.

£2,420 could pay for four people with dementia to attend weekly sessions of a Dementia Cafè for a year, where they can meet others living with dementia, share experiences and feel the benefits of supporting each other.

£3,700 could pay for a group of five people with dementia to enjoy one session of Singing for the Brain® a week for a year.

£5,000 could pay to train an advisor working on our National Dementia Helpline, so that people affected by dementia get the advice and support they need.
