Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I decided to start running, and thought I would combine it with a charitable event, so I am running the Great Mancheter 10k 2011 for the Cardiomyopathy Association on the 15th May.
My family is one of many who suffer from the disease Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Numerous members of my family have suffered from the condition, some of which have lead to death. It is a genetic condition which affects about 1 in 500 of the UK population.
If you suffer from this disease your heart muscle can become excessivly thick. This reduces the amount of room in your heart ventircles, meaning less blood can be pumped around the body. This can lead to a reduction in oxygen within the body.
It is perhaps most well-known as a leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes . The occurrence of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a significant cause of sudden unexpected cardiac death in any age group and as a cause of disabling cardiac symptoms. Younger people are likely to have a more severe form of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and is frequently asymptomatic until sudden cardiac death.
So, me and my sister are both running this 10K for the Cardiomyopathy Assosication (CMA). The CMA is a registered charity that helps people and their families affected by the disease.
