Story
We’ve both cycled in London quite a bit over the past few years, but with a handful of notable exceptions – the time Rebecca’s bike was attacked by an incensed stranger and left looking like an aluminium pretzel; James’s various involuntary dismountings – it’s been pretty uneventful. Most of the rides we’ve done amount to little more than a 4-mile commute or the odd spin around Hackney Marshes.
So, we thought we’d up the ante by attempting the 55-mile ride from London to Brighton. On Sunday 10 September we’ll be setting off from Clapham Common with only our wits, our smartphones, a well-signed route and thousands of other cyclists to guide us.
We won’t be doing it purely to cause ourselves pain: we’re hoping to raise as much as we can for Crisis, the national homelessness charity. Since 1967, Crisis has helped tens of thousands of people out of homelessness. Crisis helps with advice and access to healthcare, employment, and, crucially, homes. In London alone, the number of rough sleepers has increased by 20 per cent in the past year. With that in mind we’re hoping to raise at least £1,500.
Our bikes are familiar with flat asphalt and exhaust fumes, wayward scooters and the occasional Chelsea tractor; it’s time to show them the bucolic delights of Croydon and Crawley, the majesty of the M25 and the brutal ascent to the top of the South Downs (248 metres), some sea air and, if all goes to plan, a pint on arrival.
