Paris Marathon 2012 · 15 April 2012 ·
The 10th February 2012 marked the 1st anniversary of the death of my dear father in law, Brian at the age of 64. Tragically Brian was diagnosed with a very aggressive and malignant brain tumour in July 2009. The diagnosis came completely out of the blue and turned our world upside down.
Brian was only given 4 - 6 months to live, yet he bravely fought this dreadful disease for 19 months! Brian endured very invasive and aggressive treatments and yet never complained, not once, in fact he kept his wicked sense of humour and famous dry wit right up until the end.
I have had the unfortunate luck of also losing a good friend, Matthew King to a brain tumour at the young age of 25.
Each year in the UK 8,500 people are diagnosed with brain and central nervous system tumours.
Although the outlook varies greatly between different types of tumour, the current overall survival rates for malignant brain tumours (brain cancer) are extremley poor, only 15% of people will survive for five years or more after their diagnosis. Treatments and survival statistics have not improved in 30 years!
Treatments include surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy all of which are extremely invasive with horrible side effects and usually only extend the patients life by a matter of months.
Brain cancer research receives the least amount of funding compared to any other type of cancer, yet it is the leading cause of cancer death in people under the age of 40.
As most of you who know me know that I have always been into my sport but longer endurance stuff has never been my cup of tea and my height and build will make this challenge even harder, but I am determind to succeed in memory of such an inspirational man, Brian..
Please please sponsor me to help fund new treatments for such a cruel and devasting disease.
Thank you so much.
Jim
