We research early diagnosis and treatments to beat pancreatic cancer.

Story

We are collecting for the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund,  in memory of Jamie.

Pancreatic cancer is sometimes called a 'silent cancer' because there are generally few symptoms in the early stages, and those that are present can be non-specific and vague.

Pancreatic cancer is notoriously difficult to diagnose and treat, because it is unusually aggressive, symptoms are often vague and appear at a late stage, when surgery is no longer possible. In these cases, the average survival time between diagnosis and death is 6 – 12 months.

Some 8,500 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year in the UK.  It has the worst survival rates of any cancer - three per cent – a figure that has not improved in forty years.  Despite being the fifth most common cause of cancer death in the UK, pancreatic cancer receives less than two per cent of overall research funding.

Research is the key to improving survival chances for those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund

The charity Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund was founded in April 2004 by Maggie Blanks, following the death of her husband from the disease in May 2003. It is the only UK charity dedicated solely to fundraising for more research into pancreatic cancer. The charity currently funds £4 million of research projects entirely from donations. The charity also aims to persuade the existing major research funders to give greater attention to the disease.
