Having suffered a spinal injury in 1979, I am only too aware of the importance of the medical facilities and the appropriate medical personnel necessary for effective rehabilitation. During the Israeli army's onslaught on the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2014, this most 'moral army' was given the coordinates of institutions which serve the humanitarian needs of Gaza's residents. The hope was that this would give Israel no excuse for obliterating the infrastructure for life to continue in Gaza. Although provided with locations of medical facilities, facilities which are given protected status in times of conflict, the deliberate destruction of Al-Wafa Rehabilitation Hospital in Gaza during the summer of 2014, has left no treatment facilities, nor equipment, for those who suffer spinal injuries. Twisted debris is all that remains of both equipment and hospital following Al-Wafa's destruction. With work and fundraising going on elsewhere to rebuild hospital facilities, my aim is to support MAP's joint programmes of training Palestinian neurosurgeons and purchasing much needed equipment for individuals who have suffered a spinal cord injury.
