Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
A good friend Tom Mann's father, Alan Mann, passed away in March 2012 after a long illness, which was a combination of many things, but a major cause of his decline was a form of dementia.
When Tom asked if I would support him and the Alzheimers Society in another challenge ... how could I resist! So I will be dragging my fat arse and beer gut over 300 miles from London to Paris in support of this worthy cause! Fortunately Tom and I will be supported by the gallant Tim Faircloth - who is also riding with us!
Dementia in any form, be it Alzheimers, vascular dementia, or dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB), is an extremely misunderstood disease. Alan's condition was a combination of all 3, but primarily vascular dementia.
Many people don't like to talk about any form of dementia - whether they have it, or a friend or relative has it. This means a lot of people a) don't understand the disease, and b) it becomes enormously difficult to tell anyone else about it. One of the hardest things about dementia is the impact upon friends, family & loved ones .
The Alzheimer's Society helps with research into the various forms of dementia, and but also very importantly, support and advice both for those suffering from the disease as well as support for those affected by it. Currently 800,000 people in the UK are affected by this, with the number expected to rise to over 1 million by 2020.
Any support that you can give this extremely worthwhile charity would be vastly appreciated.
