Story

Unfortunately my idol, David Higgins, recently passed away after a long battle with Cancer which was made more complicated by Covid-19.

My Dad was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Lymphoma in his early sixties and bravely battled it for 5 years.

If it wasn't for the cancer treatment trials, which were funded by this charity, then I never would've had the extra 5 years with him that I did, and I will cherish the memories we made in those 5 years forever. This is why I'm fundraising for Nottingham City Hospital Charity Fund, specifically for the Haematology And Lymphoma Research area.

The charity is directly responsible for the research, treatment and management of my Dad’s type of follicular lymphoma. Without their help, which is funded by donations, it would’ve been a very different story to the one we had with him over the last 5 years.

I know he had some difficult moments when going through the treatments, but I always found it so inspiring that, at least from how he looked, it wasn't even really that recognisable that he had cancer, which is a testament to the team at Nottingham City Hospital Haematology Ward and everyone that helped him.

It never took his dignity, nor his desire to eventually recover from it. If there is some positive to take away from having cancer it's that I secretly think he liked being part of a scientific trial that could've been for the greater good and this is one the main reasons my Dad wants to give back to the charity that helped him immensely.

I'm taking part in Nottingham Hospital's Charity Skydive!Jumping out of a plane at over 10,000 feet, flying through the clouds at 120mph all to raise funds for Nottingham's Hospitals.Nottingham Hospitals Charity enhances patient care at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trusts Queens Medical Centre & City Hospital. Donations help provide added extras such as improved facilities, equipment, research & staff development.

When donating, if you could please mark down in the comments in memory of David John Higgins and please make sure you write "lymphoma research" as well.

Thanks,

James
