I am attempting to fly 1200km from Land’s End to John O’Groats on a powered paraglider to raise funds for The Donna Louise Hospice: for children and young adults.
For those that don’t know, powered paragliding is the ultimate in stripped back flight, essentially a parachute powered by a large fan. This marathon journey will be a physical, mental and technical endurance challenge for both man and machine. The route passes over the most isolated and remote areas Great Britain has to offer, with the extreme landscape producing turbulence and wind shear. Paramotors are notoriously unreliable and can be very dangerous, on my last flight before deciding to do this challenge I blew a hole in my piston, the engine stopped and luckily I made it to a beach for an emergency landing! More populated areas bring their own challenges, having to fly through military danger areas and around restricted airspace, all the while having to find safe places to land and refuel along the journey.
A team from Flying for Heroes undertook the same challenge back in 2011, and set the record at 7 days. I am hoping to slash this record in half on his attempt.
James Du Pavey and his wonderful team have been in partnership with The Donna Louise since April 2017 and have already raised over £10,000 through various challenges and their charity ‘For Sale’ board initiative. James is hoping to raise a further £10,000 this year with the help of this endurance challenge.
The Donna Louise is such a special place and provides absolutely critical services for children and families in Staffordshire and Cheshire with life shortening and life limiting conditions. In a time of cutbacks to the NHS and community services, charities like this have a larger role than ever to play in these families’ lives and every penny raised makes a real difference.
I am paying all costs associated with the trip so 100% of the money raised will go directly to this wonderful charity. I am at the mercy of the British weather, so I can’t be more specific than to say the trip will take place during the Summer of 2019, but you will be able to see my progress online.
