Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In May 2010 my father had his first stroke (cerebral bleed). It was a relatively minor stroke, but shook the whole family. Dad had never been ill let alone in hospital, so it was devastating to see him struggling to communicate for those early days after the stroke.
Though Dad recovered well and led a normal and active life, including climbing up Hay Tor rock on Boxing Day 2011 with my family - see photo. There was always a concern it may happen again. Unfortunately it did on 31st January 2012. Again Dad was admitted to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth and began his rehabilitation. Though a more serious stroke, Dad responded well again. He was moved from the acute stroke ward on to the rehab ward after two weeks and was looking forward to getting home. Sadly in the early hours of 28th February 2012 Dad suffered another bleed, which he did not wake from and passed away with Mum by his side that morning.
While Dad was in hospital I unfortunately contracted pneumonia and was laid up unable to travel to Portsmouth to see him. Regrettably I did not get to see Dad recovering and was not able to get to his bedside in time on the 28th Feb.
Dad's funeral was held in Portsmouth Cathedral and donations were made to the Stroke Association a cause that clearly helps many families come to terms with the effects of a stroke, while also researching ways to help prevent this life changing condition. My father was a fit and healthy man enjoying retired life and undoubtedly was taken from his family and friends too early. I felt helpless knowing there was nothing I could do for Dad, but I can help others by running the Great South Run and it is fitting that it starts close to where Dad was finally laid to rest.
I would be so grateful if you could sponsor me and make a small donation to this very worthy cause and in so doing help support others who have suffered a stroke. Thank you.
