KEVIN MCGINN – 17/06/74 to 20/03/2022

– “Something inside so Strong”

Kevin was the most kind, inspirational, loving and brave man, and if you knew him , you were blessed to know and be part of his life.  Kevin truly was unique, he had a special gift When he entered the room, it lit up and came alive , he had such beautiful energy and presence and was so funny.

Kevin was diagnosed with an inoperable Brain Tumour in February 2009 which shattered the lives of everyone around him and despite no prognosis of length of life, it was Kevin’s absolute strength and courage which carried everyone right through to the end of his 13 year battle.

Kevin endured a year of chemotherapy medication and when this didn’t work he underwent a 6 week intensive course of radiotherapy at the highest European  dose possible.  Despite this , his daily visits to the The Beatson Hospital for his treatment ,  all you heard was the laughing of the nurses and one patient in waiting room said” he should be cloned and put in every ward as he was better than any medication “.  Despite being so scared Kevin had the heart and courage  of a lion , he continued to live life as only he knew how, with laughter and love.

On 27th February 2010  just a year on and  Kevin despite his diagnosis and treatments threw himself into organising his own charity night where with help from family and friends  he raised £16000 for Beatson Glasgow and being such a success again the following year where he raised a further £8000.

Kevin was such a very clever , determined and  strong man who built and drove his own Double Glazing  business for many years before poor health required him to retire In 2012. Kevin suffered a massive seizure where he had to endure the start of his journey dealing with ongoing seizures and despite how brave he was these deeply scared him, the not knowing , when , where, the severity.   Kevin used to laugh at his “early retirement as he called it “and said he preferred to spend his time doing his pastime passion of shop, shop, shopping.

Kevin loved, lived and breathed for his team the worldwide famous Glasgow Celtic being a season ticket holder and travelled far and wide including Europe to watch his beloved team.   One of his favourite players was John Hartson who also endured his own fight with cancer and started his charity “Grab it by the Balls”.  Kevin jumped at the opportunity to enter into a charity climb in July 2014 of BEN NEVIS, BRITAIN’S HIGHST MOUNTAIN and unbelievably again showing the pure drive and determination of his character took this in his stride,  He was one of the last off the mountain, not because he was slowing but his compassionate and caring nature was helping another walker down from the mountain.

Despite his chemotherapy treatments over the years, the ongoing debilitating tiredness, seizures , chronic nerve pain itdidn’t stop Kevin in doing his other absolute love of life, toholiday and travel.   Kevin experienced holidays in his short lifetime some could only dream of including travelling across America on many occasions his favourite , cruising in the Caribbean and South America.

In 2019 when Kevin reached a miraculous milestone of 10 years living with his diagnosis a surprise party was organised. He was so humbled and cried at the out pouring of love for him. It was a heart-breaking moment for us all watch but soon turned to just pure  love and joy  as as usual  when he hit that dance floor like the hundreds  of dance floors he’s  danced , shimmied and strutted his stuff across over all  his life, the party came alive.

Tragically in July 2021 Kevin suffered a massive bleed to the brain , his tumour burst and he lost all movement in left hand side of his body and left bed bound.  Kevin still had faith and optimism he would get better but his body deteriorating told another story.  Anyone who has nursed their loved one on palliative care will know the heartwrenching pain  to watch the person you love slowly bit by bit , day by day ,  fade away in front of your eyes and there is nothing you can do to stop it.  Kevin never wanted to talk about dying, he knew, his eyes told you that, he was so scared but yet still so tremendously brave,  still thinking and caring for those around him. He didn’t want to leave and his absolute belief in his faith and going to Heaven and better place helped him through his 13 year journey but especially during his last 8 months to when he died peacefully surrounded by love where his heart was , his home.

The world is heartbreakingly now a quieter place, despite the countless memories and stories told by so many family and friends, he is a legend, he will never be forgotten.
