Just One Law Firm Challenge · 9 November 2020 to 20 November 2020 ·

Help us ensure justice is for all people, not just those who can afford it.

Story

The Team:  Beth Baker (Chair), Brittany Alston, Seth Hayes

The Details:

Jackson Kelly believes in equity, fairness, and the idea that justice is for all people, not just those who can afford it.  That's why we're participating, for the fourth year in a row, in the Just One Law Firm Challenge, which runs November 9-20 (postponed from its usual May date due to COVID.)

During this time of pandemic, Legal Aid of West Virginia and its clients need our support more than ever.  Last year we raised more money than any other firm in the state: $34,817, and had 100% attorney participation in the Charleston and Morgantown offices!  Help us meet our new goal of  raising $38,000 from all our West Virginia offices.  All it takes is Just One gift, Just One time a year, at an amount at least equivalent to your hourly billing rate.

Who Are Legal Aid clients?

Legal Aid of West Virginia is our state's primary provider of civil legal services to vulnerable and low-income individuals and families. They help parents and children who have experienced domestic violence to secure protective orders and equitable divorce settlements that allow them to end the cycle of violence and move on to healthier futures.

They also assist seniors who have suffered financial exploitation, often at the hands of trusted family members or friends, to recover lost assets. Then they stand by them during the criminal proceedings that often follow after law enforcement is alerted.

Legal Aid also aids families of children with disabilities in accessing the educational assistance and services to which they are entitled, an especially critical issue during the COVID pandemic.

Finally, a new Legal Aid project is helping those in recovery from substance use disorder to address legal issues - such as reinstatement of licenses, and expungement of offenses related to their substance use - that can become barriers to long-term, stable recovery.

This describes only some of the services they offer to the over 10,000 individuals and families they work with each year. Without Legal Aid, there would be nowhere else for them to turn.  No one should have to go it alone in court, particularly our most vulnerable citizens.  Let's help Legal Aid ensure that all people have access to justice, not just those who can afford an attorney!
