We fund equipment, research & facilities to support patients at our four hospitals
Story
Three years ago my father was informed that he needed a double heart by-pass. He was referred to Queen Elisabeth / University Hospital Birmingham. On undertaking the operation it was determined that his condition was worse than originally expected resulting in the operation changing to a quadruple heart by-pass. This was a shock to my father and to our family, but clearly this change in his treatment saved his life. The positive approach by the hospital helped my father during the following months as he recovered from the operation. The facilities and staff at the hospital were fantastic working with us and my father to ensure a speedy recovery. We have, therefore, decided that we would like to give something back, to help the hospital as they further their work and to provide support to other families who are facing a similar diagnosis.
Myself (Jackie Hendley), and my husband, Kieron have therefore, decided to trek the High Inca Trail during May 2015, with two of our friends, in order to raise money for this fantastic cause. When deciding on which trek to do we decided we wanted to set ourselves a challenge, and, therefore, felt we should undertake the High Inca Trail (being more strenuous and at higher altitude) rather than the Classic Inca Trail. This trek is graded as challenging, with seven days point-to-point walking, covering a distance of 67.9km with large parts at high altitude, reaching a maximum altitude of 4,960m. Sections of the trek will take us over difficult terrain with steep climbs and descents. We will be camping overnight on the route with some nights expected to be below freezing.
We have paid the full cost of the trek ourselves ensuring that every penny we raise will go direct to the charity. Should you wish to support this cause, please donate through our Just Giving Page.
