Story
Hi, I'm Jack and I love nature!
Nature is all around us. From the tallest tree to microscopic algae; from the cracks in the pavement to the highlands of Scotland, it's there even if we don't always notice it. It's responsible for the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the earth we grow food in. Without it, we simply just wouldn't be here. With it, it's proven to be hugely beneficial to our wellbeing and mental health in recent research, and provides us with renewable energy and beautiful places to visit and enjoy.
But nature is in real trouble. The degradation of natural habitat, human exploitation of natural resources, complete habitat loss, and climate change has led to half of all wildlife globally to disappear. Half of everything that once lived on the Earth just 40 years ago is now gone, and it is continuing to decline rapidly.
There is hope, however. The RSPB and similar charities are fighting for nature. RSPB-led projects such as The Albatross Task Force have reduced albatross by-catch deaths in trawl fisheries by 99%, saving the lives of 1000s of birds, and RSPB campaigning for the environment in partnership with other conservation organisations has led to huge areas of our marine and land-based environment to become globally protected.
For the me though, the reason for raising money for the RSPB is closer to home. Less than 10% of children in the UK now play regularly in natural places and the biggest threat to conservation and the environment is peoples' disconnect from nature. To truly save the natural world, we must reach the ones set to inherit it - young people - with the message of nature's importance. The RSPB is working to connect young people to nature through its education and engagement work, to ensure that generations to come will inherit a world richer in nature, for everyone to enjoy, and for the benefit of all.
