Story

I'm taking on the marathon for a second time for Scope, the disability equality charity in England and Wales. They provide practical information and emotional support when it's most needed, and campaign relentlessly to create a fairer society.

One of their disabilities they support and work to change is Epilepsy. Epilepsy as a condition, has been becoming ever more present in my life over the last 5 years. In April 2020 when the marathon takes place, it will almost be 5 years to the day that I lost a childhood  friend to Epilepsy, my friend Tom, who passed away in his sleep in 2015. The tragedy has left a huge hole in the hearts of many, so running in his memory on the 5 year anniversary feels very poignant.

Secondly, I am in a committed and loving relationship and I happen to find myself with someone who also suffers from Epilepsy. The condition, whilst under control, affects my partner and I find myself constantly worrying as to whether they are OK. Running for them, and with them on the sidelines supporting, would be a truly incredible, and very emotional moment in my life. I want to do everything and anything to potentially make their life better or easier.

Finally, my sister's brother-in-law was also diagnosed with Epilesy, which as a result prevented him from following his dream of entering the military. This has obviously had a huge impact on his life, and I admire his strength and determination every day.

My dream is that one day these sort of things won't happen any more - that people won't pass away, that anyone people can follow their dreams, and people's lives can go on as normal, free from worry when it comes to Epilepsy.

Scope works to provide support and advice for many conditions, including Epilepsy, and works with the major Epilepsy charities. Any donations are very welcome!
