The saying goes that first impressions last a lifetime, after my experience this past year I’d argue that last impressions do too.
The care and support offered to my mum last year from all of the staff and volunteers at Priscilla Bacon hospice meant that she was able to live in dignity and good spirits during her last phase. My brothers and I were also helped massively by home visits, being able to call, or visit at any point in the day to make sure she was okay.
In the last year, Priscilla Bacon Lodge and the Hospice at Home team supported 10,000 palliative care service users.
For 40 years, Priscilla Bacon Lodge has provided a high standard of specialist end-of-life care, in partnership with the NHS, from its 16 bed hospice in Norwich.
Despite its achievements, it is now inadequate both in scale and configuration, as the population of Norfolk has trebled in this time. Unfortunately, in its current location, the building cannot be extended. The Lodge is also dealing with an ever-increasing number of Complex Care cases across inpatients, outpatients and the ‘Hospice at Home’ service.
The time has come to create a new hospice for Norfolk. The 24 bed Priscilla Bacon Hospice will be built on land adjacent to the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital. The new hospice will boast the most modern and very best facilities, plus a wider range of community day care and out-patient services. This will help to meet the ever-more complex specialist palliative care needs of the county.
