In December 2002 I suffered a seizure whilst on a Cricket Tour in Sri Lanka. Following CT and MRI scans, results confirmed the presence of a ping pong ball sized Brain Tumour. Subsequent surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham in 2003 saw the biopsy diagnose my tumour as a Grade 2 Malignant Astrocytoma. I was 17 years old at the time of diagnosis.
Following my most recent MRI visit to the QE Hospital in January 2022, the doctors have confirmed that there have been no changes to the images of my brain. This marks 20 years since my original seizure and symptoms.
I feel unbelievably lucky to be in this position and to be able to lead a normal life, not to mention being fortunate enough to have my own wonderful family (with a new addition to the Brydon family arriving in March!)
In recognition of this 20 year landmark, I have entered the Marbella 70.3 Ironman on the 22nd May in an effort to raise as many funds as possible for the brilliant charity that is Brain Tumour Research. This involves a 1.2mile (1.9km) swim, 56mile (90km) bike ride and 13.1mile (21.1km) run. I am aiming to complete this in and around the 6 hour mark.
Brain Tumour Research receives no income from the Government, relying entirely on funds raised by supporters to help in the Charities mission to build a network of experts in sustainable research at their UK Centres of Excellence. It costs Brain Tumour Research £2,740 a day for one of these centres to remain open and carry out their vital work.
Now those that know me well will appreciate that I've always been partial to a few packets of Salt and Vinegar crisps and maybe even a few more lagers.... Training is therefore not being taken lightly and you can keep up with this in the Strava link on my page.
If you could please find it in your hearts to donate to what is a fantastic cause, the Brydon family and the Brain Tumour Research community would be hugely grateful.
