The Reason Why...
We are both students at Bridgwater College studying the BTEC National Diploma in Sports and Exercise Science and in March 2011, we have been given the opportunity of a life time, to travel to Port Elizabeth in South Africa. The aim of this trip is to work with underprivileged children developing sport within the local community. It will also develop our coaching skills and gain a real insight to sport in South Africa.
Within the trip we will be helping coach the children from the townships in a range of sports including football, cricket, hockey and many other sports. We will also be able to help organise a Community sports event for the children from township schools whilst we are there. In addition to this, we will have the chance to visit one of the orphanages, and work with the children here. We will also have an opportunity to coach within local schools and work with the Centre of Excellence, aimed at raising opportunities for gifted children in the townships. This includes coaching, helping with Life Skills and undertaking a local project to improve facilities.
This is a fantastic opportunity for me to experience another culture, and contribute towards a struggling community. In preparation for the trip, I will also be helping to raise money to take the orphanage children out on a day trip, to provide food for all children at the sports tournament, and to provide local community schools with much needed equipment.
We are working with the Umzingisi Project, a Public Benefit Organisation (no. 930025212) . The project aims to make a difference to those children in the townships through the medium of sport. They are linked with the local clubs and schools and have helped to develop centres of excellence with the University of Port Elizabeth. The trip will take place in the March 2011. Thank you very much for taking your time to read this and we hope you really consider supporting us with this trip. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.
