Beat is the UK’s eating disorder charity. Our mission is to end the pain and suffering caused by eating disorders. These serious mental illnesses ruin and, too often, take lives. Our Helpline is available online or by phone for anyone suffering, as well as their family and friends.

Story

I am running the Edinburgh Marathon on May 31st 2015, in aid of Beat, an eating disorder charity. This cause is very close to my heart, having been recently confronted with the illness, Anorexia Nervosa, within my family. Anyone can be affected by this devastating illness; even a seemingly happy teenager within a strong, supportive family unit. Awareness must be raised to reduce an ever increasing problem within our society.

Beat's vision is that eating disorders will be beaten.

Beat's aims are:

    • To change the way everyone thinks and talks about eating disorders
    • To improve the way services and treatment are provided
    • And to help anyone believe that their eating disorder can be beaten
They do this by:

    • Challenging the stereotypes and stigma that people with eating disorders face
    • Campaigning for better services and treatment
    • Providing information, support and encouragement to seek treatment and recover
I believe Beat can help our family defeat this illness. Recovery may take years but ultimately dreams will be achieved. Running the marathon will certainly be a mental as well as physical challenge; by no means will the challenge be as great as an individual recovering from an eating disorder. Nevertheless, I hope my fundraising efforts from this challenge will benefit those who are faced with such an illness, whether personally, or whilst supporting a close friend or relative.

Your support is very much appreciated, thank you.
