Story

Isla McNab was born 10 weeks early on 27.1.05, weighing only 1lb 10.5oz (760g).  She developed Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) at 4 weeks and had a life saving operation to remove 3cm of her bowel and had a stoma in place for 7 weeks.  This is a fairly common infection in premature babies.  Isla was in the neo-natal unit in Aberdeen for 14 weeks and 1 day (99 days).

As a result of her premature birth, Isla has spastic diplegia cerebral palsy meaning she can't walk unaided.   Although she has limited mobility, she is a very sociable little girl, joining in various clubs and organisationseg Brownies, Girls Brigade, Angels Choir to name but a few

SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotamy) an operation, is available in the UK and USA to help her walk independantly.   The operation involves cutting some of the sensory nerve fibres that come from the muscles and therefore reduce the spasticity or tightness in her legs.

Although the operation is available in the UK, with a 100% success rate, Isla's surgeon is unwilling to send her for assessment as in his opinion she has insufficient mobility.   Therefore we are having to raise over £50K for the operation to be carried out in St Louis Childrens Hospital in America.   The intense physio needed after will also have to be paid for as the NHS won't provide any extra.   I believe this will be in the region of £15K but still have to have this confirmed.

Please help us raise the £65,000 needed for Tree of Hope to help Isla get the SDR operation that would change her life.

Should we exceed the target amount (or if we do not raise enough funds, or if they cannot be used for any other reason) the funds raised will go the the general funds of Tree of Hope to assist other sick children.
