Salaams everyone,
I am setting up this page to raise awareness and raise funds for current projects being held in lies off the mouth of the Rufiji River in Southern Tanzania. Mafia Island is one of the least developed parts of an undeveloped country.
The Island has a population of 45,000 and consists of one main island and eight mini islands in the Indian Ocean. People are facing a severe shortage of safe drinking water for local use. Not having simple and safe drinking water has caused dreadful privation for the local community to the extent of affecting their daily economic activities. This was one of my main findings, the island does not have good medical facilities but most of the medical problems we came across were water related (Cholera, diarrhoea, ringworm etc)
Another problem faced on the island was malaria, we have come up with the solution to this, the use of simple mosquito nets (cost approx. £2 each) can make a big a difference in their lives. All these troubles are made worse by the fact that the island has really poor medical facilities with shortage of basic drugs such as paracetamols and other painkillers.
Other problems that are present are very poor educational facilities. There is no secondary education available at all and no one is educated enough to teach at that level. They have a number of maddrassas which are catering quite well for the spiritual needs of the students but they lack basic facilities too.
I know with current recession, times are hard but even a little goes along way, and even a small change can make a big difference. Remember even the mighty Ocean is made up of little water droplets.
Thank you for listening.
