Story
Welcome to my Mental Health Awareness Week page!
1 in 4 people are dealing with a mental health problem every year, often not diagnosed and that is why I am choosing to support Mind in Mid Herts with their "Don't Sleep on Your Mental Health Campaign" to support them to raise awareness and to enable them to support more people in Hertfordshire who are in need of their help.
I am a keen supporter of Mind in Mid Herts "Get Set Go" project which involves exercise! Outdoor time is important and it is proven physical activity can play a vital role in the lives of people with mental health difficulties, reducing the risk of depression by up to 30%.
Unfortunately, we also know that many people who do want to participate in sport are being held back by their mental health; whether that’s feelings of low self-confidence, exhaustion or fear of crowded spaces. The aim of the project is to not only to get someone back into exercise but to also have the opportunity to speak with someone before, during or after to support their mental health at the same time.
The Challenge:
I will cycle in my home county of Hertfordshire 1 meter for every 4 people in Hertfordshire who at some point in their life might be affected by mental health.
If your interested in the stats and how far I will cover over the course of the week see below:
- Hertfordshire population = ~1.2million people
- 1 in 4 affected by mental health = 300,000 people
- 300,000 people is a total of 300,000 meters
- 300,000 meters over 7 days is 43,000 meters each day to cycle
I will track my progress using the app Komoot. See my routes planned attached. Follow me on Komoot: Isaac_Kenyon or click this link:
