Story
I am doing this charity run for my Mum who was affected by a stroke 4 years ago. She was in a critical condition for the first 6 months. It has been a very painful 4 years for me and my family.
My Mum is now disabled from the condition and not able to walk. I have decided to do this 10K run to raise funds for the Stroke Association. Hopefully the money raised will go towards research in the causes of strokes.
It is unbelievable to think that 150,000 people suffer from a stroke every year - one person every five minutes. Most people affected are over 65 but anyone can have a stroke, including children and even babies. It is one of the biggest killers and the leading cause of severe disability in the world. I'm sure that most of you will know of someone who has suffered from a stroke.
The Stroke Association is the only charity solely concerned with preventing stroke and ensuring that everyone affected by a stroke across the UK gets the help they need. It is a vital charity and just small amounts can help.
The aftercare is an extensive program which can only occur from local stroke clinics and resources.
Before seeing the Stroke Association website, I just thought that the treatment after a stroke was the only important factor but this is not true. Awareness for those unaffected is also a key factor and research to battle the condition is an ongoing process.
