Story
We are planning to relay swim around the IOW in one day to help raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Having cancer at a young age comes with its own particular set of challenges. Without the work of Teenage Cancer Trust, young people with cancer can be treated alongside children or elderly patients, isolating them when they most need support that’s appropriate for their age group. They might be treated by cancer specialists who have no experience of working with young people, and aren’t aware of the very specific challenges that come with having cancer when you’re young. They know that having cancer at a young age comes with its own particular set of challenges. Their services put the needs of young people first and allow them to face those challenges together.
The IOW Swim team is made up of triathletes, beach lifeguards and swim instructors who will share the swim load of 60,000 strokes on the 4th of July (weather permitting).
The swim is 60 miles which is approximately 3 times the length of the English Channel or 3960 lengths of a 25 metre pool.
Starting at Yarmouth at 03:00 am, we will swim anti clockwise around the island, with the objective of maintaining a speed of 28mins per mile to take full advantage of the tides for 18 hours. Our relay strategy is for each team member to be swimming 30 minutes on followed by 2hrs 30 min hours off on a strict rotation.
It is an epic effort that requires a little luck with the weather, detailed planning to take advantage of the tides and a fitness level to sustain the distance. Less than a dozen relay teams have ever completed the Isle of Wight challenge in its entire history.
The boat has been very kindly donated by Mendez Marine Ltd, Hamble River Boat Yard, Bridge Rd, Swanwick, Southampton SO31 7EB.
Who specialise in all levels of Motor Cruising and Powerboat instruction.
Discounts available to P&O employees. Just show your ID card.
Our boat will be Skippered by Tim Peace who has not only calculated the tides but also mapped out our swim route for the best chance of success.
We hope to raise £1500 so we really appreciate any donation you can afford. Thanks so much in advance.
