As parents of children with epilepsy, our lives have been completely affected by all that this condition brings. Not only do we face the endless trauma of our children having life threatening seizures, we have to manage the behaviour, the developmental delays, the side effects of the medication and the upset when nothing seems to be helping our children.
THis is where we have found a complete blessing in an otherwise very dark, empty place we have found ourselves in. We have been lucky enough to discover the ketogenic diet, a successful method of treating epilepsy effectively without the use of drugs. This diet is a high fat(one of the main ingredients being cream, which gave us the idea for this challenge.) strictly measured diet that can stop seizures where other medication has failed.
We are setting up the Inyaface challenge to help raise awareness of the diet to families out there that are struggling to cope with and manage epilepsy and to give back to two amazing charities in the UK that have supported our families, the ones fortunate enough to be following the diet. The Daisy Garland
The Daisy Garland is a family run , national ,registered children's charity supporting some of the 18000 children in the UK with drug resistant epilepsy. It was set up in 2004 in memory of our brave and wonderful daughter Daisy. Daisy suffered from epilepsy from the age of 5 1/2 months, and she tragically died in her sleep 3 days after her 6th birthday from SUDEP (Sudden unexpected Death in Epilepsy Patients).
Our two largest projects are to fund Daisy Garland ketogenic dieticians to work in NHS hospitals within the UK successfully treating children with difficult to control epilepsy. Each full time ketogenic dietician costs £45k per annum and we have funded 11 dieticians in the past 9 years. We also provide grants for the night-time breathing monitors keeping children safe at night while they sleep. Each monitor retails at £880 and we have provided grants for 135 families in the last 12 months.

-To raise public and professional awareness of ketogenic therapy as a treatment option for epilepsy, metabolic and other neurological disorders.
-to provide parents and families with up to date, evidence based information to support informed decision making around ketogenic therapy choices.
-to support families and patients through their dietary therapy journey.
- to support professionals in their administration of dietary therapies by way do literature, ketogenic starter packs and files, education conferences and training meetings and provide funding, where possible.
-to support clinical research into ketogenic therapy to further the understanding of how it works, who it works best for and how the beneficial effects can be most effectively and practically achieved.
