Welcome to my fund raising page and the exciting year long Big Knit Project due to launch in June 2008 at Newcastle upon Tyne’s Green Festival.
Knitting may be making it big in celebrity headlines with the stars clicking away on set, but no needles come bigger than my Big Knit Needles standing 4m tall and 6.5cm in diameter, specially manufactured by Newcastle Hardwood for the Big Knit Project. The Project will be making use of every inch of these needles to create the world’s largest one piece knitted textile and raise funds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s £1,000 Challenge.
At shows and promotional events up and down the country during 2008/9, you’ll have the chance to try your hand at knitting with the gigantic needles in return for making a contribution to the charity. So, forget your gym membership, just follow us around knitting for a year and you’ll be unbelievably fit by summer 2009! And have helped to raise money to open 3 new vital breast cancer research units in Edinburgh, Manchester and London. Or you can simply contribute online here.
My mum died from breast cancer just two years ago. I’m definitely not alone in the experience of losing someone in this way. Every month, breast cancer causes 1,000 deaths in the UK and it seemed to me to make sense for the Big Knit Project to take up the £1,000 Challenge. The £1,000 Challenge Appeal was launched in 1991 to raise funds to open the first dedicated breast cancer research centre in the UK. The Toby Robins Breast Cancer Research Centre opened in 1999 and now has over 120 scientists working towards Breakthrough’s vision of a future free from the fear of breast cancer.
