Story

Hey Everyone 😬

Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page, and get to know what we are up to!

In September 2022 we (George and Indya (dad and I)) are heading to Nepal for 10 days on an experience of a lifetime! We will be trekking in the Annapurna region of the worlds highest mountain range, The Himalayas, all in aid of MND Scotland.

In March 2019 my Granny, who is 75, was diagnosed with MND and since then she has been supported by MND Scotland.  They have helped my Granny in so many ways from providing essential equipment and services to accessible holiday accommodation and practical support to weekly Zoom calls with other sufferers throughout lockdown.  They have also been a key support to our family since the day my Granny was diagnosed, helping us all come to terms with and deal with my Granny’s diagnosis. The list of support they offer to those suffering with MND and their families is endless and invaluable.

My Granny recently shared a wee story about living with MND throughout lockdown. The story is attached below if you would like to read a little bit about things from her perspective. 😊

Motor Neurone Disease is an incurable, terminal disease which affects the body’s motor nerves. Motor Neurones carry signals from the brain to the muscles telling them to move. MND stops this signal reaching the muscles and therefore over time the muscles weaken and eventually stop working, leaving sufferers trapped in a body they can no longer control.

The disease affects everyone differently, each individual has their own very difficult journey with the disease. Losing motor function, gradually leads to the inability to complete basic tasks such as eating, drinking, talking, walking and eventually breathing. My Granny has been fortunate that she has been able to live her life to the fullest until symptoms made things difficult for her.  Others are not so fortunate and diagnoses can come at an early age and develop quickly.

Currently, there is NO cure and devastatingly, around half of all sufferers die within the first two years of diagnosis.

At the start of 2020 MND Scotland invested in a landmark drug trial called MND-SMART along with other Scottish MND charities, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and the Euan MacDonald Centre for MND Research. This is a huge step forward in finding a cure for MND! (I will attach more information on this below!)😊

With the way the world is at the moment, fundraising events have been difficult to plan. As a family we have all been brainstorming different ideas which has been very exciting! We will keep everyone updated with our plans as they unfold 😬

Raising awareness of such a horrible disease and funds for such an amazing charity so close to our hearts is something I am so proud of. This next year is going to be a rollercoaster i’m sure but we are excited and ready for the challenge that awaits!  It is our way to give something back to this Charity who have helped my Granny - one of the most incredible and inspirational people I know.  She is the glue that holds our wee family close together and we are determined to raise as much money as possible to support her and the charity further.

The money you give today will help people with MND in Scotland and their families in countless ways! We are so grateful for every single penny, especially in times like these.

Thank you for your time and donation 😊
