About our appeal: bringing sand dams to India
Clean water for three villages
The Marwar region of Rajasthan is the most densely populated arid land in the world - meaning millions of people struggle to get enough water to survive. It is no surprise that the word Marwar means 'Land of Death'.
Excellent Development is supporting three communities to build seven sand dams, which will transform lives: a year round access to clean water for their families, livestock and crops.
What's the plan? More sand dams, more water
Working with local partners to construct seven sand dams
We need to raise £80,000 to support the villages of Bhakasar,Thumba Ka Goliya and Jasol, to fund the construction of seven sand dams, beginning in November 2013. The sand dams will bring clean, safe water to thousands of people - water that is essential for drinking, growing food and sustaining livestock.
Meet the people: Bhakasar & Jasol villages
Sand dams - for people and their livestock
In the Bhakasar village, there is currently one talab (water resevoir) which is 12kms away from people's homes. In combination with a new talab the sand dam will help sustain the 2,000 people in the village and 1,000 livestock.
The village of Jasol is represented by the community group Jal Sabha. Chairman of the Jal Sabha group said:
"The construction of several sand dams will provide drinking water, restore communal pasture grassland and sustain livestock."
Please support us with a donation today, so that we can conserve water in one of the world's driest places.
Thank you.
