Story
Lynn was passionate about playing tennis and she loved playing with her friends as part of Highbury Ladies’ Second team. When she was first diagnosed with breast cancer Lynn worked hard on her recovery and was able to play again with the team in many further matches and helped us improve our ranking.
Lynn was a feisty player with a formidable forehand and she wasn’t the sort to give up. She fought cancer with the same brave spirit … but sadly she lost that fight on 15 September 2013.
The Highbury Ladies’ Second Team organised a tennis tournament, followed by tea and cake, in memory of Lynn on 9th November 2013. The weather was appalling and the courts had to be swept of puddles (only partially successful) before play could begin, but Highbury Ladies are a tough bunch and weren't going to let a bit of rain spoil their fun! The tournament was very successful and raised over £800 for CANCERActive from entry fees, donations, and sale of raffle tickets, and an unexpected bonus of selling off the uneaten but delicious cakes after everyone had eaten their fill.
It was so much fun that it turned into an annual event. The 2020 tournament took place on Sunday 11th October. It was a much reduced event, restricted to just the Ladies 2 team with one or two extras, followed by socially distanced tea and cake in the Oasis cafe. Donations via this page are voluntary.
‘Lynn, you were such a fun and feisty player, we loved playing with you and we will always remember you as a part of our team.’
